"This enchanting place has retained the memory of a young believer of our century, Pier Giorgio Frassati, whom I had the joy to proclaim "Blessed" on May 20, 1990. He would often visit this little town of Cogne. He daringly explored the peaks towering over it and made each of his ascents an itinerary to accompany his ascetic and spiritual journey, a school of prayer and worship, a commitment to discipline and elevation. He confided to his friends, 'Every day that passes, I fall more desperately in love with the mountains.' And he continued: "I am ever more determined to climb the mountains, to scale the mighty peaks, to feel that pure joy which can only be felt in the mountains.'
Blessed Pier Giorgio could combine his admiration for the harmony of creation with his generous service to the Lord and to his brothers and sisters.
Admiration of creation, admiration of God's work is so necessary. And may this virtual contemporary of ours, Pier Giorgio, be an example to all those who go to the mountains... Facing such an extraordinary display of nature, it comes spontaneously to us to raise our hearts to heaven, just as young Frassati loved to do frequently."
