Sts. Fabian and Sebastian is known by the locals as the Cangio church because of the street that borders its small piazza. This church was the site of the wedding of Pier Giorgio's parents, Alfredo and Adelaide, on September 5, 1898, at 6 o'clock in the morning. (Remember the fast rules of the Church back in those days.) It sits down the hill and quite a bit around the bend from the family's summer home in Pollone.
When Pier Giorgio was born in Turin, he suffered from third degree asphyxiation. Out of concern that he might not survive, the following day he was baptized quickly with water by the parish priest at La Crocetta. His parents were encouraged to complete the rites of Baptism as soon as possible. But wanting to have the benefit of a formal ceremony, they did not do it until he was almost five months old. This took place at the Cangio church on the occasion of his parents' third wedding anniversary. His godmother was his grandmother Giuseppina Frassati; his godfather was his grandfather Francesco Ametis.
A framed portrait of Pier Giorgio is on the right side altar at this church, along with a copy of his supplemental baptismal certificate. A pew reserved for his godfather and still bearing his name is in the back of the right side altar area. Before you leave, be sure to admire the beautiful ceiling above the sanctuary.
